If you want to repair your own board, here are some suggestions.Â
Here is a general overview of the steps involved in repairing a surfboard ding:
-
Gather your materials: You will need a fiberglass repair kit, which should include a resin, hardener, fiberglass cloth, and sandpaper. You may also need a heat gun or hairdryer to help cure the resin.
-
Clean the area: Use sandpaper to rough up the surface around the ding. This will help the repair material to bond with the board. Wipe the area with a dry cloth to remove any dust or debris.
-
Cut the fiberglass cloth: Cut a piece of fiberglass cloth to fit over the ding, leaving a few inches of excess on all sides.
-
Mix the resin: Follow the instructions on the resin and hardener to mix the correct ratio. The resin should be thick but still workable.
-
Apply the resin: Use a plastic spreader or putty knife to apply a thin layer of resin over the ding. Place the fiberglass cloth over the resin and smooth it down with the spreader.
-
Apply a second layer of resin: Once the first layer has dried, apply a second layer of resin over the fiberglass cloth. Use the heat gun or hairdryer to help the resin cure, if necessary.
-
Sand and polish: Once the resin has fully cured, use sandpaper to smooth the surface and remove any excess. Finish by polishing the area with a fine grit sandpaper or a polishing compound.
With a little patience and attention to detail, you can successfully repair a surfboard ding and get back in the water. It is a good idea to practice on a small, inconspicuous area before attempting to repair a larger ding.
