Local knowledge on some of the popular Surf Spots in Broward County Florida.  Surfing in Broward takes a great amount of dedication and some deep local knowledge to catch the best waves. If you are traveling to the area and want to surf, show the locals some respect and they will respect you and might help you catch better waves.

Winter Swells: Winter tends to have the best waves in South Florida. We get cold fronts that move through the area, bringing an offshore flow with them which creates a rebound swell. These swells usually last one to two days at best and produce predominately left breaking waves. These cold fronts can drop the temperatures into the 30's for the morning session, so have some rubber ready.

Windchop: The majority of the waves in South Florida are from local generated wind. These waves are pretty fun compared to similar types of waves at other areas of the state. South Florida wind chop can be peaky with rights and lefts that have good high performance fun sections. Check the local marine forecast for winds 10-15 knots and above to create any rideable surf in South Florida.

Hurricanes: Hurricane season runs from June 1st till November 30th every year. Contrary to many non-surfers beliefs, hurricanes usually do not provide the best waves we get each year. South Florida is blocked by the Bahamas from any long period swell, for a distant swell to reach us it has to be at an extreme North angle. Hurricanes that pass Florida and head towards the Carolinas usually throw a swell back at us.
